Space Education Adventure

Birmingham CLC's have over a number of years supported pupils to take part in a prestigious science and engineering programme, working with NASA at both the Kennedy Space Centre (KSC) in Florida and The Johnson Space Centre (JSC) in Houston Texas.

The KSC experience includes hands-on activities such as astronaut training, tours and input from astronauts and space scientists.

The students from Great Barr, Bishop Vesey, St Josephs, Callington, St Edmund Campion and George Eliot will use cutting edge technology to record the experience and share it with the wider community on their 11 day adventure beginning October 22nd 2008.

Wind Power

In a near first for a British School our wind turbine project is moving ahead extremely quickly now. Due to "internal difficulties" the mast is being installed on the Cardinal Wiseman RC Technology College site and consists of a 15m mast that will be used to power up to 20 computers.

The mast is being erected over the October half term and you will be able to view the progress on our webcam here.

A Day At The Movies

We had a really fun day yesterday with a number of teachers from Plantsbrook School and Boldmere Junior School.
They attended a training day using camcorders to remake a scene from a movie of their choice. They then imported their footage into our Mac Minis where they edited the scene using iMovie and added voice overs, special effects and music.
We have run the day with students before, so running it with teachers was an...experience! (A good one I must add!). Please remember we do keep the footage for the next time we have your students in!

Lets Dance!

My name is Julie Coyle and I teach dance at the CLC. The classes are held on a Friday afternoon 3:30 – 4:30 and I teach Street Dance for all ages. It is £4.00 per hour boys and girls welcome. The first class took place on Friday 2nd March, a group of year seven girls from Stockland Green Technology College came over to the CLC for a street dance class. The girls learnt a whole street routine they were all a little nervous at first but soon got into it once the music started. Next week we are going to learn another routine and we will be dancing to Justin Timberlake’s new single. We will also go through what we learnt last week. It was great fun! We hope to see more girls/boys join soon.

"Due to severe weather all schools and nurseries in Birmingham are closed on Thursday 08 and Friday 09 February 2007. Cllr Les Lawrence, cabinet member for Children Young People & Families, said that he has taken the decision to close schools because of the severe weather, transport difficulties and to ensure the safety of all children and staff."

Astronaut Drops In

On Thursday 18 January 2007, the pupils from a number of Birmingham School’s will have a unique opportunity to meet a truly inspiring, modern day hero when Major General Charles Bolden, a

astronaut, visits Birmingham.

General Bolden grew up in the heart of the segregated Deep South of the US during the Civil Rights movement. He was one of the first African-Americans to enter the US Naval Academy. He joined the US Marine Corps as a Naval Aviator, flew more than 100 combat missions in Vietnam and became a test pilot.

In 1980, he joined NASA as one of the first African-American astronauts and flew in space four times, including the mission that launched the Hubble Space Telescope. On two occasions, he was the mission Commander.

Only 450 people have ever been into space. General Bolden is therefore part of an elite group. He is undertaking a very limited tour, visiting only 3 cities in the UK.

The visit has been organized by Birmingham’s’ City Learning Centre’s CLC’s.

General Bolden is marking the 50th anniversary of spaceflight and the two hundredth anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. Mr James Jordan, who is Head of the City Learning Centre at Stockland Green, says, “We hope that our pupils will realize from General Bolden’s example that through hard work and determination, they can overcome any obstacle that might be put in their way to achieving their goals. They, like General Bolden, can be a shining light for others to follow.”

He provides a truly inspirational role model and personifies how young people can overcome racial prejudice and social deprivation to fulfil their dreams and ambitions. He will also motivate our girls and boys to consider careers and courses in maths, engineering and science and show them what cool jobs and lifestyles can be achieved.
